Bangladesh Determined to Save Dhaka

Bangladesh Water Resources Minister, Anisul Islam Mahmud, has called for keeping the surrounding rivers running by freeing the banks from encroachment to save Dhaka city from floods.

According to him, the rivers could not be freed from encroachment without cooperation of the people.

The minister was speaking as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony for the workshop titled ‘Floods in Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta‘ at BRAC Center Inn in the city.

Jointly organized by Institute of Water Modeling (IWM) and Delta Alliance Bangladesh wing, the workshop was presided over by IWM Executive Director and Delta Jote Coordinator Prof. Dr. M. Monowar Hossain.

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Water Resources Engineering Professor Dr. Umme Kulsum Novera, Bangladesh Water Development Board Engineer M Mahfuzur Rahman, CEGIS Deputy Executive Director Dr. Mominul Haq Sarkar, IWM water expert Emaduddin Ahmed, Water Resources Planning Agency Director Saiful Alam and Water Development Board CEIP Project Director Sharafat Hossain Khan presented a keynote papers in the workshop.

State Minister for Water Resources Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Water Resources Secretary Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan, Netherlands embassy official Martin Van Hugstraten and Water Resources Planning Agency Director General Engineer Abdur Rab Mian also spoke on the occasion.
