Dredging operations in Atascadero Creek and the Goleta Slough near Ward Memorial Drive in Goleta started earlier this week, the Santa Barbara County Public Works said in their latest announcement.
A large crane is excavating sediment from the area and stockpiling the material on the access road near the bike path.
The sediment travels down the creek, settles in the slough, and leads to a rise in flood risk in the area.
According to the official announcement, the county is protecting homes and business in the area by removing the sediment and decreasing the flooding levels in the slough.
The county will begin trucking this material to Goleta Beach at the end of the month.
The entire project will be finished by the middle of November.
