Southsea Coastal Scheme – Ground Investigation Works

A new phase of ground investigation works for the Southsea Coastal Scheme will begin on Monday, 26 February, reports the Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership (ESCP).

The main program of ground investigation work took place throughout autumn 2017, however there are some areas along the seafront that need additional testing during February and March.

According to ESCP, over the coming weeks various types of machinery will be operating in the area.

This will include:

  • The drilling of boreholes in the ground. These usually take about 2 days to complete. Some boreholes will have equipment installed to measure groundwater levels and will then be capped.
  • The extraction of concrete cores from existing coastal defenses. This will involve the removal of samples from the defenses.

The Southsea Coastal Scheme is a Portsmouth City Council project being delivered through the Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership.

A specialist team – led by Balfour Beatty and supported by Arup and Ramboll – has been selected to design the scheme. This integrated team is focused on the future success and resilience of Southsea seafront, and is working closely with Portsmouth City Council, the Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership and the Environment Agency to protect and enhance its unique character.
