Indonesia: Public Works Ministry Prepares for 2012 Floods

The Public Works Ministry has announced plans to anticipate possible major flooding in the early months of 2012.

The ministry said the plan included widening and dredging rivers as well as reinforcing the embankments of several major rivers. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has predicted the rainy season will peak in January and February 2012, which will cause flooding in some parts of the country.

The ministry’s director of rivers and coastal areas, Pitoyo Subandrio, said the widening and dredging of waterways would cover Ciliwung, Krukut, Pesanggrahan and Angke rivers as well as the East Flood Canal project.

Reinforcement of river embankments will start with the Bengawan Solo.
