USA: Dredging at Lake Providence Port Moves Ahead

Wyly Gilfoil, the Lake Providence Port director, said the cutterhead dredge Butcher, which arrived at the port on August 9, continues to carve a path from the river to the port docks.

“It’s going fairly well,” Gilfoil said. “The Army Corps of Engineers said dredging will be complete by September 1, but I think it is ahead of schedule.”

Drew Smith, a hydraulic engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers’ Vicksburg District, said: “We just haven’t had any significant rain in the right spot in the Ohio Valley, and what has fallen isn’t making it to the river.” According to thenewsstar.com, on Monday almost 100 barges were stranded there, while the Army Corps dredged the main channel to 9 feet.
