Deltares: New Managing Director (The Netherlands)

New Managing Director

Maarten Smits (51) will take up his position as the new managing director of Deltares, the research institute for water, subsurface and infrastructure, with effect from 1 December 2012. He will succeed Harry Baayen, who will be retiring effective the same date.

The new managing director describes Deltares as ‘a fantastic research institute with an excellent global position’. He has a particular affinity with knowledge development through teamwork, sharing knowledge and a multidisciplinary approach. ‘That results in better solutions to challenges in delta areas. They are always complex, and never one-dimensional.’

He describes the Deltares Strategic Plan and the 2012-2015 Research Plan as a sound guideline for the years to come. He is looking forward to drawing on his working experience abroad and his global network to further the international ambitions of Deltares.
