Historic Meeting Set for Houston Port Commission (USA)

Historic Meeting Set for Houston Port Commission

The Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority will meet in regular session on Tuesday, January 22, at 9:30 a.m. in the boardroom of the Port Authority Executive Building, 111 East Loop North (Exit 29 off Loop 610) in Houston.

History will be made as the first female chairman convenes the meeting. This will also be the first meeting for two new commissioners.

During the commission meeting, results of a major survey on capital and maintenance investments made by manufacturers for infrastructure along the Houston Ship Channel will also be released. Construction jobs and tax revenue are anticipated to increase significantly due to these investments.

Port Commission Chairman Janiece Longoria was appointed during a joint session of the Harris County Commissioners Court and the Houston City Council earlier this month. She has served on the Port Commission on behalf of the City of Houston since September 2002.

Longoria is also the first Hispanic to serve as chairman of the Port of Houston Authority. She replaces James T. Edmonds, who had served as Port Commission Chairman since 2000. Edmonds did not seek re-appointment.

Joining Longoria in new positions on the Port Commission will be John D. Kennedy and Dean Corgey. Kennedy was appointed by Harris County Commissioners Court last month. He fills the seat vacated by Elyse Lanier, who tendered her resignation indicating a desire to spend more time with her family.

Corgey was appointed to the Port Commission by Houston City Council earlier this week. Port Commissioners serve two-year terms without pay.

An additional item of note is that the Port Commission will evaluate competitive sealed proposals and consider awarding a construction contract for expanding and improving the Port Coordination Center. Commissioners will also consider amending Port of Houston Authority Tariff Nos. 8,14 and 15, covering the Turning Basin Terminals, Barbours Cut Terminal and Bayport Container Terminal, effective Feb. 1, 2013.

A meeting of the Board of Pilot Commissioners is scheduled for 10 a.m., or immediately following the adjournment of the regular Port Commission meeting.
