UK: New Lerwick Quay on Schedule

New Lerwick Quay on Schedule

Local contractor Tulloch Developments has completed piling works for the 151-metre long berth at Mair’s Yard where an extensive area of land has been reclaimed.

The work follows a Scottish Government’s allocation in 2012 of £965,283 from the European Fisheries Fund (EFF) towards the cost of the £3 million-plus quay project.

The minimum six metres’ water depth alongside the quay – pre-dredged in 2008 – is one of the prime reasons for relocating the market, construction of which is hoped to begin in 2014.

The quay will generate considerable benefits ahead of the new market by increasing berthing available at Holmsgarth.

Sandra Laurenson, Lerwick Port Authority Chief Executive, said: “The developments will deliver significant improvements, including in the landing and handling of fish and in supporting and servicing vessels, and will reinforce Lerwick’s role as a leading centre for the industry.
