Sand Nourishment at Salisbury Beach Wrapped Up (USA)

The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and the Town of Salisbury completed work on a sand nourishment project along Salisbury Beach last week.

The project is designed to better fortify Salisbury Beach against the full force of northeast storms and beach erosion. The project is a unique partnership between the state and the Town of Salisbury, working together to expedite the
placement of sand this summer season.

“DCR has worked with the Town of Salisbury over the last several months to help protect the community from coastal erosion and strengthening winter storms,” said DCR Commissioner Jack Murray. “I thank Senator O’Connor Ives, Representative Costello, and Town Manager Harrington for their commitment and support of this project. The community has patiently awaited this project and we are pleased that the project has been completed by the start of the summer season.”

The $310,000 project created 1674 linear feet of Barrier Beach Dune from Salisbury Beach Access Number 6 and 7. Sumco Eco Contracting of Salem began the work by removing damaged snow fencing and posts along the project area.

Following the fence removal, 8800 cubic yards of sand was placed along the project site over a period of two weeks, creating the Barrier Beach dune. DCR will next install snow fencing on the restored dune system. DCR will plant dune grass in the fall of 2014.
