Black River Canal Dredging Begins

Dredging operations along the Lake Huron end of the Black River Canal in Port Huron are currently underway.

We worked with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to get an emergency permit to get it back open. The canal should be open to boaters by the weekend,” said Port Huron City Manager James Freed.

The costs of this dredging work will be covered with money collected by a tax increment finance authority dedicated to the canal’s maintenance.

Freed added that dredging works are not normally permitted between June and August and an emergency application had to be filed with the DEQ.
