Business & Finance

Suffolk County has secured over $6 million that will be used for improving the Hampton Bays community.

The announcement was made by the Deputy Presiding Officer and Second District County Legislator Jay Schneiderman following Wednesday’s session of the County Legislature.

According to Schneiderman, the funds were secured for the resurfacing project on Main Street in Hampton Bays, to dredge the Shinnecock East Canal and for improvements of the Shinnecock Canal Tidal Locks. He also supported a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the county and Town of Southampton to clear the way for the Canoe Place Inn project.

The county committed over $2 million to dredge the Shinnecock East Canal to improve navigational safety in the channel. Schneiderman also secured $1.5 million for the reconstruction of the Shinnecock Canal Tidal Locks.

Dredging work in the canal will start either in late fall or early winter.
