The purpose of the maintenance dredging is to remove sediment that has accumulated over time, so vessels that deliver food, fuel and supplies to the island of Molokai may safely enter, exit and maneuver within the harbor.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for maintaining the project depths in the entrance channel and turning basin area.

The project was last maintenance dredged in 1973.

Kaunakakai Harbor is located on the south-central coast of the island of Moloka’i.
