Marco Island’s South Beach Replenishment Moves Ahead

Despite being peak tourist season, the schedule for work on the South Beach Marco Island beach requires completion within the next couple of weeks before the start of turtle nesting season on May 1.

We have been making very good progress,” said Gary McAlpin, the Collier County coastal zone management director who updated Marco Island City Council on the project’s status on Monday, according to news-press.com.

The beach renourisment work to be performed on Marco Island will be undertaken from the Somerset condominium south to the Belize at Cape Marco.

The contractor is Cavache, Inc., and the cost is $630,000.

The project includes:

• Adding at least 77,000 cubic yards of sand;

• Extending the beach about 80 feet into the Gulf of Mexico;

• Repairing five erosion-prevention structures – three jetties and two T-groins.
