Liverpool2, with support from Royal HaskoningDHV, at Seaforth has moved into next phase as work to reclaim 12ha of land passes the first stage. Further infilling is due to take place over the summer.
Royal HaskoningDHV is providing environmental oversight for Liverpool2 – a challenging Peel Ports led project. Once completed, the port will be the most centrally-located deep water container terminal in Great Britain.
Following Royal HaskoningDHV’s initial environmental impact assessment and work to secure the Marine Licence, the majority of the 296 steel piles needed have now been driven into the seabed allowing 1.43 million tonnes of sand and silt taken from the Mersey estuary and Liverpool Bay to be deposited behind the new quay wall.
At 30 meters the quay wall is one of the highest in Europe and when complete the wall will use 19,000 tonnes of steelwork and 30,000 cubic meters of concrete. Royal HaskoningDHV has also supported the quay wall contractor, BAM Nuttal Van Oord JV, in meeting regulatory requirements under the Marine Licence, which was awarded in 2012. During construction of the quay wall, Royal HaskoningDHV has successfully obtained a number of licence variations, to help ensure that the project remained on track.
The second stage of infilling will begin this month with further 4 million tonnes of dredged material to be removed from the river. The project is due to be completed by the end of 2015.
