Minister Momen inaugurates Surma River dredging

Bangladeshi Foreign Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) from Sylhet-1 Constituency, Dr AK Abdul Momen, inaugurated the dredging works on the Surma River in Sylhet on Saturday.

Under the project, about 18 kilometers of the river will be dredged – from Kushighat in Sylhet City to Lamakaji Bridge – in the first phase.

This work will be undertaken under two contractors, Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said.

Sylhet’s BWDB Executive Engineer, Asif Ahmad, said that once the first phase of dredging is completed, the navigability of Surma River is set to increase significantly.

The work was formally inaugurated yesterday by the Minister at Chanpur area of Moghal Gaon Union of Sadar upazila.

The district officials, public representatives and political leaders were present on the occasion.

It is expected that this dredging program will be completed by June.
