Tchefuncte coastal projects coming this year

St. Tammany Parish President Michael Cooper recently spoke to the Maritime Museum of Louisiana on the coastal restoration and protection projects around the historic Tchefuncte Lighthouse and Madisonville area.

Among the projects mentioned is the $1.6 million Tchefuncte Habitat Restoration & Shoreline Protection scheme that will build a protective breakwater, 300’ dock and reinforced shoreline. Construction is expected to begin Summer 2024.

Next, the $3.2 million Lower Tchefuncte Breakwater project aims to provide protection from immediate threats and simulate the historic eastern peninsula at the mouth of the Tchefuncte River. Construction is expected to begin Fall 2024.

Tchefuncte West Bank Marsh Restoration: Marsh creation which will utilize 161,000 CY of dredged material from Lake Pontchartrain to rebuild land and protect wetlands to the west of the Tchefuncte River.

These projects are a part of the 16 parish-wide coastal restoration and protection projects President Cooper’s administration is undertaking through federal GOMESA dollars.
